How she is:joann_hosp.jpg (16121 bytes)

As you know by now, Joann is at Albany Medical Center with a large, inoperable, cancerous tumor in her right lung. She is also 27 weeks pregnant. This has greatly complicated her treatment. Her doctors, Stephen H. Grund, MD, PhD, Oncology, and Marla S. Eglowstein, MD, Perinatology, have researched and consulted with colleagues around the country to design a treatment program that will start Joann's recovery and be safe for the baby.

Joann had her first chemotherapy yesterday. She was very apprehensive when she saw two huge syringes with the medication, but relaxed somewhat when Joyce, her RN, told her it would be injected into the intravenous bag and she realized she wouldn't have to roll over. Jim called just a few minutes after the drip started and was glad he was able to wish her good luck.

Anti-nausea medication is given at the same time. It worked for Joann, and she wasn't nauseous. Overnight, Joann's blood oxygen level dropped to 90%, and she was put on oxygen to help bring it back up. Joann had visits from her sisters Judy and Janet, her sister-in-law Rosmarie, and of course, Jim, all of which she expected. She had surprise visits from her sister Ginny, her dear friends Pam and George Casimir, and Andy Estus, a ISWIS client from Albany. By the way, Pam was Matron of Honor at Joann and Jim's wedding on September 10, 1994.

Look back at yesterday's edition for more information about the chemotherapy treatment.

About baby Larissa:Baby2.gif (18562 bytes)

Larissa today is at 27 weeks. The ultrasound to the right was taken on Friday, June 26. She weighed 2 lbs. She should be gaining approximately 1/2 lbs. a week as she starts the third trimester of her pre-birth development. She will be delivered at the end of one of Joann's chemotherapy cycles, by Cesarean section, of course. So the earliest delivery date will be July 22. We will keep you posted here.

What about Jim?Jim_sshh.jpg (16339 bytes)oops.jpg (8117 bytes)

Jim has been caught several times this week leaving the bathroom with the toilet seat up. This is a serious problem. Please don't tell Joann, because she already has more than enough to worry about. Besides, she is not going to be very happy if she comes home and discovers that she has to train him all over again. What's the poor fellow to do?

Well, Joann doesn't have a computer at the hospital yet, so Jim has a little bit of time to get straightened around. Check back here in a few days to see how he is doing.

And Blacky?blky_whats_up.jpg (16210 bytes)

Blacky misses Mommy, but he is being very good about it. So far he has chewed up only one of Aunt Judy's Rubbermaid food containers.
