Joann Mary Ives, 44, of Kingston, New York, died on December 21, 1999, at Albany Medical Center Hospital, after a long illness. "From the time she was diagnosed with lung cancer in June of 1998, she never abandoned her smile, or her determination to overcome this disease.", said her husband, James F. Shaughnessy, Jr. He maintained a web journal of her last year to keep family and friends informed, and as a keepsake for their daughter (http://joann.iswis.com).

Ms. Ives was born in Meriden, Connecticut, on June 8, 1955, to the late M. Edward and Clotilde Brazeau Ives. She and her husband were married on September 10, 1994, at Opus 40, in Saugerties, New York. Their daughter, Larissa Ives Shaughnessy, was born on July 24, 1998, at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

In addition to her husband and daughter, survivors include three sisters, Judith Ives Barba of Poughkeepsie, New York; Janet Ives Angelis of Albany, New York; and Virginia Ives Bishop of South Glastonbury, Connecticut; two brothers, Jonathan Edward Ives of Yalesville, Connecticut; and Jeffrey Raoul Ives of South Meriden, Connecticut; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Ms. Ives graduated from the College of Architecture Art and Planning at Cornell University in 1978. She completed graduate studies at the University of London and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1995, she earned a Certificate in Multimedia Technology from the Center for Digital Multimedia at New York University.

Ms. Ives was a web site designer. She was co-founder and president of Ives & Shaughnessy Web Information Services, Inc., in Kingston, New York (http://www.iswis.com). She designed many award-winning web sites. She was also sole proprietor of Clo’s Daughter, which designed and manufactured uniquely crafted kitchen items, including “Hot Mitts” potholders (http://www.hotmitts.com). She was a Registered Architect in New York State and worked for fourteen years at IBM in Kingston and Poughkeepsie, New York, as a facilities designer and manufacturing engineer. She established a private architectural practice specializing in the revitalization of low-income housing, which she discontinued in 1998.

Ms. Ives was an incorporator and officer of the Entreneurial Catalyst Forum, and the first director of its Multimedia Access and Study Center (MASC). These organizations were pioneers in introducing business, government, and community leaders in the Hudson Valley to the Internet and the World Wide Web.

Ms. Ives served as president of the Ulster Arts Alliance. Her illness forced her to resign that position. She served as a board member of St. Simeon Home in Poughkeepsie, New York, from 1994 to 1995. She was active in the Community Experimental Reporatory Theater (CERT) in Poughkeepsie, New York, and served as its treasurer.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, December 26, 1999, from 2:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon and 7:00 to 9:00 in the evening at the A. Carr & Sons Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Avenue, Kingston, New York. The funeral service will be held of Monday, Decebber 27, 1999, at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 207 Albany Avenue, Kingston, New York. Interment will be private.
