Today is Joann's 66th birthday. Happy Birthday, Joann. I vividly remember her 39th birthday, the first I celebrated with her, in 1994. I was in charge of planning, dinner at Rudy's Big Indian Restaurant, in Shandaken, NY. It is a 45 minute drive. We arrived, and discovered it was closed, and had been for some time! Oops. What is that about making a reservation? This was before we had cell phones. Driving back to Kingston, we stopped at 2 restaurants - closed. Finally, very hungry, we arrived at the Bear Cafe in Bearsville (Woodstock), which was open and still serving! I was more careful in future years!

Our great niece, River Folan, is still being treated for neuroblastoma in Dallas. River and her parents, Jazmine and Joah, have shown great strength and spirit through many months of difficult treatment. Please keep the family in your prayers.

Rest in Peace, Joann.

Thank you to family and friends who visit this page. I cherish your memories, too.

Today is the 21th anniversary of Joann’s passing. On this day of the year, I particularly remember Joe Biden saying, "The time will come, when the image of your loved one crosses your mind, a smile will come to your lips before a tear comes to your eye."

We are fortunate that we have President-elect Biden to lead us through the rest of the pandemic and beyond. We need empathy in the Oval Office and competence and integrity in our federal administration.

Today, Joann's great niece, River Folan, is in surgery today, after several months of chemotherapy, for neuroblastoma. River is four years old, the daughter of Jasmine Ives Folan and Jason Folan, the granddaughter of Jon Ives, who passed on February 15, 2010. River is a beautiful, bright, and brave young girl. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She and her Mom remind me of Joann.

Rest in Peace, Joann and Jon.

Best wishes for Happy and Safe Holidays and New Year. 2021 holds much promise for being a better year for the world than 2020.

Thank you to family and friends who visit this page. I cherish your memories, too.

Today is the 20th anniversary of Joann’s passing. As each year goes by, it is more difficult to decide how to publically acknowledge it. Certainly 20 years is a significant milestone. And my life for more than twenty-five years has extended from my marriage to Joann and that definition will continue into the future.

The passage of time obscures the acute grief and pain of the loss. Good memories remain; they are sometimes unfathomable. I do cherish them.

I also cherish the friends who may read this and the memories associated with them.

Best wishes for the holidays and New Year.

Rest in peace, Joann.

It is 18 years since Joann's passing.

Larissa is 19 years old. She is living in an apartment now and has her own Christmas tree this year. She bought her first Christmas ornament in Reykjavik during her very successful trip to Iceland in the beginning of December. (I am proud of that accomplishment!) Yesterday she went to Judy's and continued your tradition of baking cookies at Wendy Drive.

On August 26, I traveled to Nantucket to attend a Celebration of Susan Starbuck's life. It was sad and celebratory at the same time. I offered the story of the Pi marker that I wrote about on your birthday. I saw many of our friends from visits to Nantucket.

Today I received a kind email from Mary Elena Selznick. Her husband Ron passed away 4 years ago today. Mary Frances has told me that her children Erica and Justin are doing well. They were regulars at Larissa's birthday parties at the farm.

Rest in peace, Joann. Many people remember you today.

Today is Joann's 62nd birthday. Happy Birthday, Joann.

My computer was in for repair and I retrieved it this afternoon, so I am posting this in the evening rather than early morning.

Joann and I visited Nantucket many times to spend time with our friends the Cravens, Starbucks, and Dunns. Milestone Road connects the town of Nantucket with Siasconset; it is six miles long, with several milestones marking the distance from the rotary. Each integer mile has a milestone set in a small clearing, long planted with daffodils, always blooming for Daffodil Weekend, the last weekend of April.

The Pi milestone clearing, at mile 3.14, didn't have flowers. During Daffodil Weekend, 2000, four months after Joann's passing, we descended on the Pi milestone clearing, and planted many daffodil bulbs in Joann's memory - the bulbs provided by Susan Starbuck.

Susan Starbuck passed over this year. She and Bob shared a lovely house on Sankaty Road in 'Sconset. She was an avid and talented gardener.

In April, Bob Starbuck sent me a photo of the Pi milestone taken during Daffodil Weekend. He said, "Still missing her spirit, love, and devotion." I feel that way about Susan.

I am sure they are enjoying each other's company again.

Today is another anniversary of Joann's passing.   Yesterday, Larissa continued the tradition of baking Christmas cookies with Judy.   She brought home a large Jody, half of which went into the freezer.   Ethan and Laura were married on November 12.   We are proud and happy for your godson.   Larissa made a trip to Boston in September for an appointment at the Boston Tattoo shop in Medford.   Her first tattoo is a tribute to you, Joann.   She is a beautiful young woman.

Today is the 16th anniversary of Joann's passing.  It is one of our days to especially remember her.

2015 is closing with unusually warm weather. We have only had a few snow flurries all season, and Christmas is just four days away.

Larissa will begin classes at Ulster County Communtity College in January, enrolling in the Liberal Arts & Sciences program.  UCCC is becoming known as SUNY Ulster.

Today is 14th anniversary of Joann's passing. We remember her and miss her. Larissa is a sophomore at Kingston High School. She plans a pre-med course of study in college with a goal of practicing internal medicine. She is in Honors Biology this year and doing very well. Today is the 13th anniversary of Joann's death. Rest in Peace, Joann. Larissa is now a ninth grade student at Kingston High School, on the high honor roll for the 1st marking period. The tree at the farm is decorated, but not as dazzling as your daughter!

The nation is mourning the murder of 20 first grade students and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. I remember your horror at the killings at Columbine in 1999, Joann. Why is this still happening?

dotp.gif (130 bytes)June 8, 2012

Today would have been Joann's 55th birthday. Marla Eglowstein and her daughter, Sophie Rich, came to a picnic on Memorial Day weekend. Larissa went to Albany with them for an overnight. It brought back many memories. We are all happy that Marla is back to work.

Obituary    Online Guest Book

I will never forget my uncle, he had the best smile, gave the biggest hug and that twinkle in his eye. I feel that when a person like jon passes, it is not nearly as great a loss for the family and friends then it Is for those who will never get to meet him.
May his soul and heart rest in peace.

Today is 10th anniversary of Joann's passing.  It is hard to believe that the first decade of the new century has gone by without you.  The passage of time lessens the grief but does not eliminate the memories we cherish or the sadness we often feel.   We miss you as a wife, mother, sister, and friend.  Larissa is growing up to be a wonderful and interesting person.  Those of us who knew you certainly know that she is your daughter.  We wish you were here to enjoy her with us and guide her to her future.

Today is Larissa's 10th birthday !!! Happy Birthday, Larissa !!! I think back to 1998 and 1999, and thank Joann for her courage and selflessness in giving birth to Larissa and nurturing her in such a wonderful way. I thank everyone who has contributed to Larissa's upbringing during her first decade.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)June 8, 2008

Today is Joann's birthday. Happy Birthday, Joann. Larissa will be 10 in July, so we have reached the 10th anniversary of the summer of 1998. That is a summer not forgotten by the Ives and Shaughnessy families and friends.

Yesterday we went to the Zena Fire Department Carnival. An artist did a pencil sketch of Larissa.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)December 21, 2007

Today is the 8th anniversary of Joann's passing. As we prepare for Christmas, we remember and miss her - mom, wife, sister, aunt, and friend. This Christmas we will miss Grandma, who died in January, and Giulia, Maria, Ed, and Elena, who are living in Italy this year.

Larissa is in fourth grade at George Washington school, and continues to do well. We did a lot of things in 2007.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)June 8, 2007

Happy Birthday, Joann! Larissa had a 60th birthday party for Jim on May 19 at the farm (Mary Frances and Ron helped of course, and Judy made the cake). We shared it with Ginny. We missed you, and some remembered the surprise 50th you had for Jim. Larissa performed her first karaoke, Yesterday by Hilary Duff. Ron's garden was magnificent.

We went to Washington, DC in April for several days. We visited Mt. Vernon, an appropriate stop for a third-grade student at George Washington School!

dotp.gif (130 bytes)December 21, 2006

Today is the 7th anniversary of Joann's passing. Larissa and Jim will observe it at home preparing for the Christmas activities planned with Giulia and Maria, who arrive from Chicago tomorrow. We will have some luminaria candles on the front walk.

Larissa is in third grade at George Washington Elementary School and is doing very well. She wants to be a veterinarian and is concentrating on good grades in science and math, her favorite subject. We had a busy year, as you can see from some of the highlights in the photo below.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)June 8, 2006

Today, Joann would be 51 years old. Happy Birthday, Joann.
Larissa and Jim went to Chicago for Easter vacation and toured Frank Lloyd Wright's Home and Studio. When we returned, Larissa did her biography book report on him. She received a certificate from Mrs. Goho for bringing Frank Lloyd Wright alive to her classmates, with her jaunty beret and scarf and a set of Froebel blocks! His birthday was June 8, too!

Two of Larissa's poems to share with you, Aroma of Roses, and The Old Oak Tree.

We visited Jim and Linda Cravens and Bob and Susan Starbuck on Nantucket during the Memorial Day break. Bob shared his thoughts in an email, after reading an article in the New York Times about Opus 40.

I read this article on Friday with very mixed emotions. I was glad to see a write-up about such a special place, but it made me miss Joann so much. She was such a bright light and so freely gave of herself. Her spirit will never die, because we will always remember all the life and love that she that she gave so freely, but I still can't believe that she is not with us in the flesh.

Jim, It was great to see you and Larissa for Memorial Day. Hopefully, we can get together more frequently in the future. Larissa is and will be a very special person, just as her mother was (hard to write that last word). I am so sorry that Joann will not be with us for her 51st birthday later this week. We all miss her and are here to support you as you raise her progeny.

Wishing you all the best, Bob

dotp.gif (130 bytes)December 21, 2005

Today is the 6th anniversary of Joann's passing. We will mark it with a small family gathering to string popcorn for the Christmas tree. Larissa wanted more festive outdoor decorations this year, so the luminaria candles we light this evening will join an abundance of lights on our porch and front yard.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)June 8, 2005

Today is the 50th anniversary of Joann's birth. Happy Birthday, Joann.

Larissa planned a surprise party for my birthday on May 15. The code for it was SPFD. We all wish we would having a big SPFM. We will think of you especially much today.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)December 21, 2004

Today is the fifth anniversary of Joann's death.

Jim & Larissa will light five luminaria this afternoon to honor her memory.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)June 8, 2004

Happy Birthday, Joann.

During her bath last night, Larissa explained to Froggy about breathing. "You breathe air into your chest, but it's just for a short visit, because you can't hold it for very long. You breath in, you breath out. If you can't breathe, then you die. Mommy had something blocking her lungs and couldn't breathe anymore, so she died. She's up above us now, in Heaven. She watches over us."

I gave her your carousel of Berol Prismacolor markers last week. She is very pleased with them, and has drawn some beautiful flowers with them.

I'll tell her later today that this is your birthday.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)December 21, 2003

Today is the fourth anniversary of Joann's death. Many of us remember her every day. We will linger with those thoughts longer today.

Jim will light four luminaria this afternoon. When you see them, know that we love you and miss you, Joann.

Larissa is 5-1/2, a kindergartner. She is strong, determined, creative, and beautiful -- definitely her mother's daughter.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)June 8, 2003

Happy Birthday, Joann. We miss you and think of you often.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)December 23, 2002

Saturday, December 21, was the third anniversary of Joann's death. We had a very small gathering and lit six luminaria that burned throughout the night. Christmas is almost here -- it will be our fourth without Joann. Larissa is 4-1/2, very precosious, often a challenge, most often a delight, and always a blessing. I am sure Joann is proud of her.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)December 24, 2001

Friday, December 21, was the second anniversary of Joann's death, and tomorrow will be our third Christmas without her. As I decorated our Christmas tree, I missed her companionship and criticisms <s>. The winter solstice will always be a day to remember Joann. The days are getting longer again, life goes on with daily routine. Larissa is growing up and brings great joy to our lives. It reminds us to be thankful for Joann's life.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)July 24, 2001

Today is Larissa's 3rd birthday. She is a a wonderful little girl and continues to bring us great joy, Joann. It is impossible to celebrate her birthday without remembering the courage you had in bringing her into the world, and the grace and dignity with which you danced with life and death. That remains an inspiration and example to many of us. Thank you.

dotp.gif (130 bytes)June 8, 2001

Joann would have celebrated her 46th birthday today. I had the following conversation with Larissa at 5:30 this morning. It is too beautiful and poignant not to share it with you, and prompts me to acknowledge Joann's birthday today.
Larissa:  "I miss my Mommy. She died, but that's okay. No problem. She's in heaven."
Jim:  "I miss her, too. She's watching over us. She's not hurting anymore. She was hurting very much."
L:  "She was hurting? Why?"
J:  "She was hurting because she was very sick".
L:  "Mommy's in heaven now. That's okay. No problem. She's not sick anymore. When she comes back, you say 'Hi' to her. Okay, Daddy?"
J:  "Okay."

Today is Larissa's 2nd birthday. Thank you, Joann, for leaving her with us. She is a wonderful little girl. We had a party at the farm, yesterday, for family and caregivers. It was a beautiful day, much like our wedding day. It would have been more perfect only if you had been there with us. Ron reminds me that you are in the next room. At the end of the day, Rosmarie helped Larissa release the 44 balloons that lined the wall. They floated off in a line to the west, high over the Ashoken reservoir. Ron told Larissa that she was sending them to Mommy. It was a very beautiful sight.

Joann would have celebrated her 45th birthday today. It is a melancholy day for family and friends. We miss her. We recognize what a vibrant and wonderful friend, sister, and partner we lost.   (Photograph by Gabriel Apfel on Nov 26, 1999)

We have no doubts about what tree Larissa fell from. Thank you, Joann, for the start you gave your daughter. She adds much joy to our lives.   (Photograph by Susan Starbuck on Apr 29, 2000)
Last year on her birthday, Joann started participating in the Healing Circle Visual Arts Program sponsored by Benedictine Hospital. The group met that evening at Seamon's Park in Saugerties. Joann did her first watercolor in many years. Jim would like to share it with you.

Joann didn't get as much time as we wanted. We are thankful for the time we had with her and grieve that we didn't have more.
